miscellaneous monday edition
would you believe that i've been silent the past 2 weeks because i...haven't had a lot to write about?
not that i haven't been busy, but the writing well's been dry. also, i bought a new computer that subsequently needed repairs (thank god for applecare!), but yeah. even when i've sat down to write, the words weren't flowing.
...so yeah. here's one more takeoff attempt.
i've listening to some of these lately:
- muse, "time is running out" (absolution, 2003)
muse is a band i've had the pleasure of discovering within the last 3 months. i first heard them at a tower records in emeryville, ca, where "black holes and revelations" was being pumped through the speakers. it was kinda like a shot to the jaw. "i HAVE to have this", i concluded. incidentally, i'd had dinner with j. in LA a couple of nights before, and she was gushing about them, that i HAD to check them out, etc. i'd written it off as some cheeseball rock band i'd hate, but kept the name in the back of my mind. so you can imagine my surprise when the tower records-guy said, "oh...this is the new muse album".
i listened to that album nonstop for about a month. i did a shitty job of describing my rabid admiration of the music here, but don't doubt it...muse is excellent! mjk was kind enough to point me in the direction of this album, which she describes as "the one with all the Big Hits...". as of now, i'm a little slower digesting it, but still very enjoyable.
- queensryche, "sign of the times" (hear in the now frontier, 1997)
roundly dismissed as a weak album, i actually LIKED the stripped-down, natural feel. while it is clearly night to the days of "empire" and "mindcrime", there are some pretty killer rock and roll songs on this recording. my cd copy is scratched and wouldn't read on my old powerbook. thankfully, the new behemoth reads everything fine. and thankfully, i can dig on this once again. also recommended: chris degarmo's singing debut on the song "you".
- prince, "everyday is a winding road" (rave un2 the joy fantastic, 1999)
prince covering sheryl crow?! i can't believe it either. but purple badness-boy turns this song into FILTHY. FUNK. SAVAGERY. i know i've struck gold when i can impress even my humorless communist-drummer, who's so funky he needs to shower.
speaking of humorless, what happened to you, mr. nelson? first your music club goes black, and now you've disappeared from myspace. is vegas keeping you that busy?!?
other recordings on the proverbial fire:
- the complete mercury recordings of roland kirk (yes, all 11 discs!)
- richard thompson, the old kit bag (quickly become another musical obsession)
- a bevy of pink floyd live bootlegs i've come across
- rzewski's theme and variations on "the people united will never be defeated", as performed by marc-andre hamelin
- keith jarrett, the koln concert
lastly, let's give a warm welcome to a. and his entry into the musico-blogging world. a fine writer who knows his stuff, i don't doubt that he'll kick some ass and take no prisoners in his journeys.
